“However [political parties] may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion.”
A warning by President George Washington against the dangers of political parties at his farewell address, which inevitably fell on deaf ears.
In 1796, few could have foreseen that presidential elections would grow to be more than a billion dollar mudslinging contest. With that being said, republicans have showed up to polls for this election higher than any year since 1980, with a 17.3% turnout according to the pew research study. The irony in this exceptional turn out, is that the republican front contender Donald Trump, has offended just about every race, gender and class of people in America and the rest of the world, throughout his campaign. Nevertheless, Donald Trump secured himself a position as the Republican party nominee. And at my dismay along with Trump large fan base, some Americans actually agree with what I would like to call narcissistic, racist, radical and irrational behavior and political views. It’s terrifying. It’s unnerving. Trumps lead may very well put our country in great risk with our global trading partners should he continue to dominate the polls and hearts of the American people. It’s time for millennial to wake up, and run to Starbucks for some Coffee, its going to be a long presidential race to the white house, and it is our job, to make sure the right candidate represents this great country.
As a minority female who has chosen to associate with the lesser of two evils (the democratic party) how could I comprehend? I guess that’s like a woman trying to feverishly understand why a man cheats. I could be reaching. Maybe too much lemonade drinking LOL. Seriously though isn’t that what were doing here. Aren’t we essentially choosing the lesser of two evils? Neither has all the answers, and both are completely at fault. In all actuality one could argue many leaders of the democratic party have very similar views of its republican counterparts. They choose however to step in the political ring and play politics. They say what needs to be said to the community, they shakes hands and take pictures with people we admire, and support only to grab our votes with empty promises and ulterior motives.
Underneath it all if only we knew how they sincerely felt the lesser, likely would be no less. It’s said a group of hoodlums who band together for mutual protection and profit, is call a gang. Which is true and its description is eerily perfect in describing the parties that lead this nation today. We are dependent upon them to lead us and we are afraid to proceed any other way. As a popular saying goes, if it’s not broken don’t fix it.
Well wake up America we are broken and if there is any chance of fixing this great country we all must actively work together as one unit, one force, and essentially one party. I firmly believe that abolishing the two-party system is the only way to eradicate this tumor that is growing in the political arena. Only then will potential candidates be forced to stand on their own beliefs, intelligence, compassion, and ability to handle responsibilities.
Will the powers that be, this? That has yet to be revealed. Until it is I guess I will continue to choose the lesser of two evils. GO DEMOCRATS…
