I personally love a good highlight and live for shimmer, but there’s a fine balance between the perfectly placed highlighter and looking like a disco ball. Here are some tips and awesome products to perfect that summer glow. Top industry Super Models gigi hadid & cara delevingne demonstrate that less is more. Beauty of your face starts with what is on the surface, your confidence and healthy skin.
Start with the right primer (buy here)
The key to achieving this look is layering different products, so you’ll want to make sure you have the right primer. If you have dry skin, a moisturizing primer like the Make Up For Ever Hydrating Primer is a good idea. This will make sure that your highlighting products will apply smoothly and won’t cling to any dry patches on your skin. On the other hand, if you have oily skin, you’d want a mattifying primer. Make Up For Ever also makes a primer for this (they recently came out with a line of 12 different primers so you’ll definitely find one to suit your needs!). I’ve been using Jouer’s Anti Blemish Matte Primer along my T-zone and have been really happy with the results.
mix an illuminator in with your base (buy here)
Gisele Bundchen, appears to have a mixture of coloration in her skin, highlight her cheekbones, bone structure, t-zone, and jaw line. For me, this is definitely the key to a glowing complexion. I used to mix NARS illuminators in Orgasm in with my NARS Sheer Glow Foundation and really liked the results. However, lately I’ve been totally obsessed with a cocktail of CoverFX Custom Cover Drops, Clarins UV Plus Multi-Protection Sunscreen.
Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Liquid in Topaz. This combination creates the perfect glow that is noticeable yet natural. I’m obsessed. Another option for dry skin is to use MAC Strobe Cream underneath a light tinted moisturizer or powder foundation. This will create a more subtle glow that’s also very flattering.
Powder lightly where necessary (buy here)
Kristen Stewart is one of Hollywood most beautiful starlet and you can never catch her with too much make up on. Depending on the weather and what I’ll be doing, I will sometimes add a little MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural to my nose. This is the only area of my face that gets shiny, and the goal here is glowy but not shiny. I really like this MAC powder for this because it will control oil but is not cakey or too matte, so it won’t interfere with the glow. Another option would be to lightly dust a translucent setting powder over oil-prone areas.
Add highlighter to high points of the face (buy here)
Natalie Portman catches the light on her face bring attention to the dark shades highlighted over facial structure. This is my favorite step because I love highlighter! Currently, I’ve been using MAC Superb, but Soft & Gentle are great alternatives for achieving a champagne colored highlight. I also really love Becca’s highlighters because they are so creamy and pigmented, so any of those would be great options as well. I like to use a fan brush to apply highlight to my cheekbones and the center of my forehead. Sometimes, I’ll also apply it to the inner corner of my eyes too! I really think this completes the look and just creates the most luminous and fresh look. Note that if I were wearing this look to work, I would probably skip this step to meet a more subtle look.
